Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR)

MBBR as compared to the conventional activated sludge process is more reliable, compact and energy effecient. 

It employs the use of polyethylene biofilm carriers that are suspended in the aration basin, the carriers help increase bacterial productivity since they provide a reliable surface for the bacteria (heterotrophic and autotrophic) to grow on. The high density of bacterial growth is what enhances the rate of biodegragdation. 

Apart from being compact in design it offers a variety of other advantages also, such as:

  1. No recycling
  2. Ease of expansion
  3. Automatically responds to fluctuations in pollution load
  4. Not required to maintain F/M ratio or MLSS value.
